Just wanted to post a quick note to let everyone know that there won’t be any new posts on Orlando Music News for a while. I’ve got a couple of big projects going on at my day job (you know, the one that actually pays me money for my time and talents), some (positive, but time-consuming) personal stuff happening, and there’s a very strong likelihood that I’m going to be writing another book soon. All that, combined with the fact that the holidays are coming up … well, something has to give, and unfortunately, this blog is gonna be it.

Not shutting it down, mind you, just taking a break until the beginning of the year. And, until then, I’m going to take down the “Upcoming Concerts” and “Submit Your Show Info” pages because … well, because they won’t be updated.

Thanks to all those who have shown support – for both this blog, and for the Orlando music scene – over the last nine months, and hopefully, when the blog comes back, I’ll have figured out a way to make both of them even better.

P.S. – If anyone wants to take over the blog for a while, I’d be more than open to it. Even if you just wanted to update the concerts section to keep the site fresh, that would be most appreciated. I just won’t have the time/mental space to do it.

P.P.S. – Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is what happens when you don’t support your local media/artists/creatives/musicians. In all honesty, had there been more feedback/engagement/donations from the people who are reading this blog, I would have felt a lot more compulsion to try to figure out a way to squeeze 39 hours worth of work into a 24 hour day. But hey, if you don’t give a shit about it, why should I?

“‘Help’ was recorded in one take using a micro-cassette recorder on October 9th, 2011.  This particular method of recording harkens back to my 2007 lo-fi solo release, Tone Poems in Low Fidelity.  This track may lead to another full-length record of similar proportions.  But for now, it stands alone.”

This Little Undershirt

Bao Le-Huu is a voyeur, a sniper at the gates of a local musician’s dream. He is also a studio hermit rarely ever performing live, so you can imagine my excitement and perverse curiosity when i learned he was to perform on stage for the first time. The event was local musician/shoegaze music expert Tierney Tough‘s birthday extravaganza (Will’s Pub, Oct. 13th).

Having followed his career path for several years, I was keenly aware of his well-documented grit and venom and I couldn’t wait to see the man finally “lay it on the line.” With my known passion for two-piece music critics I was initially dismayed to learn he was to be performing solo. My concern was almost to prove correct when the artist’s legendary performance anxiety almost got the best of him. After being carried to the stage, the set immediately got off to a rough start. The sound was a little muddy and Bao seemed to lack focus at first, several times singing far away from the mic or choosing not to sing at all.

While his performance lacked physicality, I feel it carried a restrained emotive weight and there was a marked “non-performing” style I found refreshing and lacking from most local artists of this genre. Although his eyes betrayed the silence like optical sumamis [sic, and, WTF?] which paralyzed this critic, we will have to wait and see if Bao can translate this vibe into a visceral live show. I personally can’t wait to find out. Welcome to the party, sir.

Also bringing it was local opener Cory (of Will’s Pub fame) with his Silver-Jews-meets-Steven-Wright-narrating-a-YouPorn-clip take on pop music. Well done, well done.

The Silver Fleece.

3) What description gets used for your band that you would most like to correct people on? Why?

Alt Country. We hear that a lot. I think that genre is too easy to pull off and honestly I think its boring.

4) What’s your favorite thing about being an Orlando band? What’s your least favorite?

My favorite thing about starting the band from Orlando was knowing everyone and everything about everyone and everything. My least favorite thing about being from Orlando is Knowing everyone and everything about everybody.

5) Any big news to share?

New single “Bookends” was just released digitally everywhere. We have our first full band tour in over a year starting in October. We are making a new record in November in New York City.

The Woolly Bushmen will be playing Orlando Brewing this Saturday, Oct. 15 with Lifeforms (from Jacksonville).

So, this thing bubbled up the other day: a Telethon remix of seven songs from Yip-Yip‘s new album:

And that was pretty cool. Local-on-local action is always sweet, but it’s even sweeter when it’s cross-genre local-on-local action.

And then Telethon’s mad genius Matt Kamm sent me an email making sure I had heard that, and dropped a few more bombs on me.

Well, this was a little unexpected, but two videos for Pauses‘ songs – “Go North” and “Hands Up” (both shot by John Deeb and Deeb Studios) – were selected for admission into two different film festivals. The Illinois International Film Festival selected “Hands Up” (which you can check out for yourself up ^^^^ there), and the Red Rock Film Festival picked “Go North” (below) as an Official Selection.

Just as a reminder, the Pauses head out on a CMJ-pointing East Coast tour Saturday with the Great Deceivers, but you can catch them Friday at Back Booth with Royal Bangs and Bear Hands. And, if you’re feeling truly rambunctious, you can come to Will’s tonight to celebrate the birthday of Pauses bassist Tierney Tough, with sets by A.T.T.I.C., Dark Sea of Awareness, a ridiculous attempt at DJ’ing by yours truly, along with cake, karaoke, and a disco dance party. The cover’s only $2, with the money going to keeping the Pauses gassed and fed while they’re on the road.
